Decoding Social Cognition through Gaze: Testing the Cooperative Eye Hypothesis
Abstract
Gaze provides a powerful window into social cognition, revealing how individuals anticipate others’ actions and how groups coordinate attention and action. My research combines eye-tracking, computer vision, and cross-species comparisons?from crows and pigeons to apes and humans?to investigate these processes in naturalistic contexts. In humans, gaze also serves as a major channel of communication. The Gaze-Signalling Hypothesis proposes that human eye morphology?particularly the uniformly white and highly exposed sclera?evolved to make eye-gaze direction more visible. The related Cooperative Eye Hypothesis proposes that this visibility specifically supports joint attention and cooperative communication. In this talk, I will first provide an overview of my comparative work and then turn to the evolution of human eye morphology, highlighting opportunities for collaboration during this visit. Although recent quantitative studies have questioned these hypotheses, I argue that new morphological and experimental evidence, including my own, supports their key premises. At the same time, these findings critically update the hypotheses by showing that the white sclera enhances eye-gaze visibility under ecologically challenging conditions, suggesting adaptations for communication in larger-scale social interactions. I will close by outlining future directions that integrate behavioral, anatomical, and genetic approaches, and by inviting collaborative perspectives to advance this research.
